With 80% or more of households having at least one computer and access to the internet, it amazes me that people still use paper classifieds. Online classifieds advertising offers a greater versatility than the outdated paper version.

Paper classifieds range from newspapers, magazines, traders and what we call shoppers in South and Southeast Georgia. Classifieds in these venues are usually not free and offer little control the ad content. Why are they not free, because they have printing and distribution costs? Online classifieds do not incur these cost, therefore most classified websites are free.

Typically when dealing with paper classifieds, the ad length is limited and unless you pay extra, you cannot post a picture of the item for sale. Not to mention that you are at the mercy of the publisher to print the correct information. With online classifieds, the length of the ad can be short or very long. The seller has complete control of ad content and can also post pictures.

Major Disadvantages of Paper Classifieds
1. Seller has a deadline to get ad posted. Online classifieds have no deadline and ads can be posted 24/7.
2. Paper classifieds have a limited circulation. Online line classifieds can reach the world.
3. Ads posted in paper appear in one weekly or monthly publication and require resubmission for future publications. Where as most online classifieds lets the seller determine how long the classified ad will remain on the website.
4. Paper classifieds require a buyer to search through all classifieds to find the item(s) they are looking to buy. Online classifieds have search features that make it easier the find a particular item.

A few years ago, I attempted to sell a few items I had taking up space. I decided to advertise them in our local shopper. I called the shopper's free classifieds phone number and recorded my ads. When the publication came out, my items were not to be found. Frustrated, I called again and place the ads one more time. A week was lost due to the fact that my items were not posted earlier. When the next issue was sent out, the shopper printed the wrong phone number. I thought to myself how ridiculous this was and thought there had to be a better way. I decided to launch an online classifieds website serving the same area in which the shopper covers. I am presently marketing this website to South and Southeast Georgia communities.
